Just a fad?

The social and legal advances of recent years* have enabled many people to feel safer about openly displaying a sexual orientation or gender identity that for a long time was considered at best laughable, at worst deviant or criminal. The history of repression of LGBT+ people is ultimately as long as the history of this movement.

However, while it is easy to understand the link between greater social tolerance towards people considered to be gender minorities and their greater visibility in the public space, we still often hear that it is just a fad, or a social movement imported from the United States and alien to French culture.
